Why Corporate Tax Cuts Are Good For America

You won’t hear this discussion in Canada, France or anywhere else that people with no understanding of economics are in power. I will avoid most of the technical mumbo jumbo and this article wil not, by any means, be a comprehensive examination of tax law or economics. Continue reading

National Defense Isn’t Everything

We spend over 50% of our budget on national defense, yet couldn’t prevent the 9/11 attacks OR correctly predict and carry out a sound battle plan in the Iraq War. In spite of this, all Republicans want to talk about is what we need to do about terrorism, illegal immigrants and liberals. Never mind that our military is currently constituted to fight a war that took place in the 1940s, and the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks is still out there. Now they’re saying it’s all about having faith, and allowing the President to rule as if he were a dictator. Continue reading

Will a Trent Lott Retirement Hand Senate to Dems?

Republican National Chairman Ken Mehlman pleaded with Lott last week to run again. The senator was as blunt with this emissary from President Bush as he was with me. “Where is our vision and our agenda?” he asked. The malaise afflicting the Bush administration not only threatens a Senate seat in Mississippi but impacts Lott’s decision whether to retire.

Moving Day Has Arrived!

We’re picking up stakes and moving west. A town called Agawam out in Western Massachusetts. This week has been hectic, but today we’ve been able to get just about everything we own into one of these boxes I’m surrounded by. I’ll have pictures of our new house posted once we’re all set up. It’ll be a few days before the posts start showing up.

There’s an old Ali fight on TV right now. The boys are asleep. They like watching old fights of Ali.

Dingell’s Holiday Jingle

Congressman John D. Dingell (MI-15) recited the following poem on the floor of the US House of Representatives concerning House Resolution 579, which expressed the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected. “Preserving Christmas” has been a frequent topic for conservative talk show hosts, including Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly.

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the House
No bills were passed ‘bout which Fox News could grouse;
Tax cuts for the wealthy were passed with great cheer,
So vacations in St. Barts soon would be near;

Katrina kids were nestled all snug in motel beds,
While visions of school and home danced in their heads;
In Iraq our soldiers needed supplies and a plan,
Plus nuclear weapons were being built in Iran;

Gas prices shot up, consumer confidence fell;
Americans feared we were on a fast track to…well…
Wait— we need a distraction— something divisive and wily;
A fabrication straight from the mouth of O’Reilly

We can pretend that Christmas is under attack
Hold a vote to save it— then pat ourselves on the back;
Silent Night, First Noel, Away in the Manger
Wake up Congress, they’re in no danger!

This time of year we see Christmas every where we go,
From churches, to homes, to schools, and yes…even Costco;
What we have is an attempt to divide and destroy,
When this is the season to unite us with joy

At Christmas time we’re taught to unite,
We don’t need a made-up reason to fight
So on O’Reilly, on Hannity, on Coulter, and those right wing blogs;
You should just sit back, relax…have a few egg nogs!

‘Tis the holiday season: enjoy it a pinch
With all our real problems, do we honestly need another Grinch?

So to my friends and my colleagues I say with delight,
A merry Christmas to all,
and to Bill O’Reilly…Happy Holidays.

Why Kerry Lost in 2004

If John Kerry walked in on somebody having sex with his wife and he held a press conference, it would sound like this:

“Today my opponent did something I find to be simply deplorable, and so I’m wrought with a lot of feelings about him, about my wife, and to get right to the center of what I’m talking about would require me to remind everyone of the fact that…”

Murtha speaks without rhetoric or meaningless filler injected just to kill time and/or confuse whoever might be listening.

Don’t Think of a Stock Price

To many (if not most) Americans, the United States economy is an enigma. With the exception of gas prices, nary an economic story retains traction for more than a few days. A good example of this was the ironic release of poverty statistics immediately preceding Katrina’s arrival onto land. Continue reading

Aegis Defense LTD – Disturbing Message Board

It’s amazing to me that this site is still up. In case it goes away anytime soon, I’m archiving the entire thing. These guys are the ones who made the video in Iraq, shooting indiscriminantly to a soundtrack (I got the video before it was removed, but need to figure out how to upload it to the site). The message board captures that subject, as well as drug and alcohol abuse by Aegis people on the ground in Iraq.

It Takes a Potemkin Village

By FRANK RICH
WHEN a government substitutes propaganda for governing, the Potemkin village is all. Since we don’t get honest information from this White House, we must instead, as the Soviets once did, decode our rulers’ fictions to discern what’s really happening. What we’re seeing now is the wheels coming off: As the administration’s stagecraft becomes more baroque, its credibility tanks further both at home and abroad. The propaganda techniques may be echt Goebbels, but they increasingly come off as pure Ali G. Continue reading

Sonicrusk – Dive Bars of Bakersfield

This is a very entertaining read, with pictures of each. Sonicrusk is a good friend of mine from our Army days, and for years we corresponded with letters back and forth. Without exception, every one I received over a 5-6 year period had me cracking up. He’s a great storyteller, and a much better writer than he’s ever given himself credit for. I must have written to him just about every time that he needed to get a blog going. I’m so glad he did!

Saddam’s Trial Resumes, but Without Him

What? Did I miss something about Saddam being in charge again? He’s calling in sick for work today. I say they get Hollywood on the phone and acquire the cart used to move Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. Set him up right there inside of the playpen, and carry on with the trial. We’ve got to get this movie cut and in the can before everyone involved is murdered. Another week and the judge is probably going to wake up with a severed camel’s head under the covers!

Lieberman

Right Thinker brought up his name in a thread where the Iraq War was being debated, citing his impression of Iraq as a safe place following a recent visit. At first I was stuck trying to figure out why I hadn’t written anything about the man, because there’s a solid feeling of resentment that’s been brewing inside of me for a while now. After thinking about it for a couple days, I’ve realized what it is that bothers me so much about him. He votes consistently as a candidate rather than as a Senator. Continue reading

Why Does FoxNews Hate Jews?

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why this ‘Christmas Under Siege’ campaign has become such an annual push on FoxNews. Bill O’Reiley’s got a list of stores on his website who supposedly piss on the feet of all Christians everywhere by going with Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings instead of Merry Christmas. Since Americans of all religions shop at these stores, what they want you to believe is it’s all the work of some kind of sinister ‘anti-Christian liberal agenda’.

Translation: Jews are trying to kill Christmas. They’ve always been jealous, because we were here first and we’ve got dibs!

“Hello Springfield High! Your principal invited us here today to sing you a few songs about Hell, and why it’s full of Liberals!”

You are an American high school student with a lot on your mind. Classes to pass, popularity to maintain and thousands of other things that matter to you now, but are insignificant to the adults that surround you. Because adults lack the ability to connect with you emotionally on these matters, and the fact that it’s their job to teach, not coddle; schools reach out to others to connect with on ‘your level’ about drugs, crime, safety and sex.

A talking dog tells you how dangerous marijuana is, and how to report a crime to police if you ever have to. Likewise, a talking bear tells you why it’s wrong to burn things. Groups of theatre people perform songs and skits to teach you about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases. And sometimes a Christian rock band is invited to the auditorium to let you know you’re going to hell unless you accept Jesus Christ as your personal savior. Continue reading

Bush Thinks He’s Your Father

“When you’re risking your life to accomplish a mission, the last thing you want to hear is that mission being questioned in our nation’s capital,” he told cadets. “I want you to know that, while there may be a lot of heated rhetoric in Washington, D.C., one thing is not in dispute: The American people stand behind you.”

How the hell does Bush know how a soldier feels at war? Continue reading

What Cunningham and Others are Responsible for in Iraq

Here’s a brief case study (more to come) of one contract for the British “private security”company Aegis, recently awarded a $293 million security contract in Iraq by the United States government.

The man who created Aegis (Lt Col Tim Spicer) has a resume that reads like a list of indictments.

– Two soldiers under his command indiscrimantly shot and killed a catholic teenager. Convicted of murder, Spicer still defends their actions.
– Arrested for illegally importing arms to Papua New Guinea for the employees of his “Private Military Company” Sandline.
– The next year he was in trouble again for breaking an arms embargo in Sierra Leone on behalf of a Canadian businessman who is currently awaiting extradition to Thailand on fraud charges.

Now some perspective. In the United States if you want to drive a truck for a living, you’re required to pass periodical drug screenings. Any kind of criminal charge on your record could exclude you from working in the financial services arena. Want to become police or a firefighter? Get in line.

How about a job leading 20,000 mercenaries in a combat zone? Continue reading
